Founded in 2004 by Tarpon native Steve Malamatos as a not for profit corporation, the Anclote Key Anglers, Inc. (AKA) is a fishing club with a four-prong focus: Fishing, Family, Education and Charity. By-laws have been adopted to ensure that the ideals on which the club was formed will be followed in both the present and the future. We see fishing as a pursuit of happiness that can bond families and sustain life-long friendships. Educational seminars and outings, picnics and tournaments, and volunteering with other not for profit businesses involves us in our community. Donating time and money to worthwhile charities further solidifies our commitment to our ideals.
Meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm with a meal available for a donation at 6:30pm. Anyone can attend a meeting or seminar; they are free and open to the public. To join, an application is completed and a liability waiver signed. Membership dues are $25 for an individual or $35 for a family (which includes parents and children). Each member is given an I.D. card. Participating vendors offer discounts to AKA members with their card. A list of vendors will be supplied, and will be modified as vendors are added or changed. T-shirts are available for $20 ($22.50>XL) for members and $25 ($27.50) for nonmembers. T-shirt monies go into club events.
Because it’s all about fishing, we hold tournaments and encourage our anglers to participate in other area tournaments as well. Our tournaments are open to the public with fees for members and nonmembers. (It pays to be a member!) A seminar, clinic, or guest speaker is part of each monthly meeting and often reflects the target of the next tournament. Other activities such as picnics, parades, parties and annual outings are planned and ad hoc committees are formed to organize them. The main charities supported by AKA are Fostering Hope Florida which provides foster homes for abused/neglected children, and area Hospices who care for the terminally ill. We donate to other charities as well.
We've had many precious moments over the years!
